85 Jeep Cherokee, What motor will fit.
I have an 85 Cherokee with a bad motor and was wondering what motors will fit. I can get a 4.0 out of an 88 cherokee and was wondering if it will fit in.
I'm new to the jeep world and can use any help I can get.

personally i would consider putting another 4 popper in there if you are going to drive it. if you are going to wheel with big tires etc. yea 6 cylinder. They never put a 6 cylinder in that yea of cherokee tho so it might me a little more difficult than it already is. Just a quick fact after i checked my book to be sure i was not giving out false info i see that L4 you had came from the factory with a whopping 86hp. note*when i said 6 cylinder i mean L6 not V-6.

Do you hear banjos?
The engine bay is shorter on the pre 1987 XJs, due to the fact that they didn't put the 4.0 in those years. I think there are clearance issues with that swap, not to mention all of the electronic goodies that would have to go in as well. It has been said before, and I'll say it again, your best bet is to just buy an XJ with a 4.0 in it already. They can be had very cheap, a friend of mine just bought one for $400....and it operates very well. Just some advise, good luck with your gig!! Laters!!
