Default 85 cherokee carb issues

Hi, I have an 85 cherokee I just bought. The fella I bought it from had take the carb off and just set it on top of the intake. Well it drove fine but had a loss of power so I took it off and tightened the bolts on the underside of the carb (the bolts that hold the carb to the spacer) and bolted it back on. Now, when I press the gas it revs really high and holds for a few seconds. And when idling the jeep sounds like its sputtering a bit. The carb in the jeep is a factory 1 barrel carb. I'm not sure how to get this thing running right and any help would be greatly appreciated!

That is a Carter YFA 1 barrel carb, with electronics Everywhere. I cant stand those things! Yes, Weber or EMPI have Very Good replacements. Who knows what the previous owner did to it. Because it was driven loose, the Computer, Yes these have a computer, is probably confused, and will take awhile to sort its self out. Try disconnecting the battery for a hour or two and see if that helps. Weber and EMPI carbs should have 1 wire going to them,..for the choke. Not 9 wires like that YFA.

You're gonna have to get a kit for the carb. Remove it and replace the lowest gasket right above where the bolts came loose. Put LocTite on the bolts when you put them back in. Ain't as computer controlled as you may think.

I thought something was wrong with the nuts when I took mine off (85 2.5L) but turned out it had lock nuts on it. Not sure if they all came that way or not, but if so maybe that PO thought it was down because it was difficult to turn the nuts.

Cruiser, would there be anything on these carbs powered by 8v? I have two wires not connected to anything that both have 8v on them right behind the air cleaner but can't find anything to connect them to.(bare ends just look like they pulled out of a connector)

Honestly, I don't remember all that crap. Get the vacuum leak/gasket fixed and go from there.

Some of the Carter's of that era had a stepper motor to adjust the mixture and an electric choke. Not sure if Jeep used that carb (BBD)?

Yes -- YFA -- stepper motor for the feedback from the "computer" and electric choke.

BBD?

BBD is the 2 barrel. This is the YFA. OP needs to concentrate on the mechanicals FIRST. Eliminate vacuum leaks as suggested with a kit. Get everything snugged up and sealed. IIRC, the YFA had no electronic mixture controls.

No way!! It wasn't some electrical gremlin in a mysterious computer system? LOL. Glad to hear it's fixed.
