howdy all. im new to the whole jeep thing. but not new to off roading. i have allways wanted a jeep of any kind really. but have a certain love for the xj's. so when due to some bad luck i lost my other 4wd vehicle i decided i was gonna buy a xj. i bought this one here for 700 bucks and drove it two hrs home. no prob. its has been driven all over since then. with minor engine work. but my question is what year is it. on my paper work there are different dates some say 84 and the others say 86. it does have the gm v-6 motor in it. i know they used it as a stop gap from 84 to 86 so it doesnt help me much. are there any tell tell signs to differinciate an 84 from an 86. that and any other info would be great thanks.

 

look in the door jamb of the drivers side there should be a build date there, also all vehicles in the us starting in '81 you can decode the vin to find the year etc

 

ive all ready tried the door jamb. but didnt know about the other. thanks is there a web site for that?
