8.25/30 combo question

Ive searched alot on here naxja and many other sites Lets get that out of the wayIs it possible to run 33's with 3.55 gears if so or not what are the advantages/disadvantages of this?

tannerp89 Mar 19, 2010 11:59 AM

yes its possible. downsides are slow acceleration, gas mileage and freeway driving...but who cares...you got 33's! :w00t:

I'm running 33s on the stock 3.55 gears and it does slow the acceleration. The gas mileage suffers from the engine working harder to keep those big meats turninig at highway speeds.

i have the same combo (d30 up front and 8.25 in rear) i will be running 33s and was wondering what gear ratio to use with this to get the best mpg i could. i would like the extra torque for off road especially

I am running 33's on my jeep with 3:55's and she seems to be doing fine just have to make compensations on the speedo . . .

here's a gear ratio calculator

I'm running 34s and swapped my gears out to 4:10's on the auto. Power is there, but mpg is horrible. IMO, I could not bare to run on 3:55's, and believe me, it took me a while to decide to go to 4:10s.

hmm. i dont have the 33s on yet. have 31s right now. guess ill have to see how it rides with the 33s. i just noticed my gas mileage was doin downhill and figured it would get worse with 33s. guess ill have to wait and find out :tongue_smilie:

rookie question... how do you change gears/gear ratio???

on 33's, most guys will run the 4.10 or the 4.56 gears.

for a long time guys with 35's couldn't go past the 4.56 gears unless they did an axle swap for a D44 or bigger axle. the 4.88 gears have come out pretty recently for the D30 and 8.25 axles. with the 4.88 though, if you run the much bigger tires, upgrade to beefy joints and allow shafts. IMO, for guys without the knowhow of modifying the axles housing on the larger axles, upgrading to alloys and bigger joints is easier for some. of course, that is all relative to the who, what were, when, and why for each person.
