5 Speed trany stuck HELP
I parked and left my Trans in 3rd gear (like I always do) and it rolled back a bit, now its stuck in some gear, all bound up! the shift lever acts like its in neutral (moves side to side) but up in the area where 1st and 3rd are! Any ideas on how to fix this with out pulling trans out...?
By the way my Cherokee is a '95 with 190000 miles on it. Thanks! |
Did you try starting the engine and gently lifting the clutch a little while pulling the the shifter? Always helps me get in reverse, i wonder if it'll help you get back out. I've always had a little side-to-side play in gear.

Yep. Did all that. I think I'm screwed and will have to pull it this weekend. Lol

I have had a very similar problem in my 65 Chevy P/U. It was stuck in reverse and I was unable to get it out. I flipped the key without pushing the clutch a couple of time and it popped it out. But, my truck doesn't have a safety switch to prevent it from turning over with out pushing in the clutch. To this day I have no idea why it was stuck in reverse.

Sounds like your shift fork (inside trans) is done
|
Well got it out of gear. Got TC into N so I could get it towed home. Next up pull the tranny!
|
Pull console out around shifter area sounds like shifter forks gotta outa line. Remove shifter take big screw driver and realign stick shifter back . Check shifter for plastic bushing on bottom while its out.
|
Thanks i will try that first!

Should I take the shifting tower off and try to move the forks?
|
Ok I can move the shifter into 1st thru 4th gears but when I let the clutch out it kills the engine in any of those four gears and I can't move the shifter into the 5th/reverse area?
|
Sounds like it's time to disassemble that thing. You have to split the case to get at the shift forks.
|
Ok now I realize that it's not killing the engine because its locked up it because its in one of the high gears! If I let the clutch out slowly and rev the engine it moves!

Ok got it ! Just played with it while idling with TC in neutral, but look at this picture is there something missing where the shifter rides?
