4x4 question
So I am currently at college and use my 96 XJ Classic a couple of times a week, when I started it tonight the 4x4 was engaged and it would not disengage while I was driving. Last time I drove it I ran the 4x4 when I got back so that it ran a little while. I am thinking that it did not disengage last time I shut it off. I have not checked the fluid in the transfer case in a while, could it be that there is no fluid in there and that is why the 4x4 would not shut off?

No...
The transfer case is not hydraulicly driven like a automatic transmission. The linkage physically slides the armature back and forth.
Usually the shift linkage binds up, or is out of adjustment is what is causing the transfer case not to shift correctly.
Running it out of fluid will cause it to heat-up and burn the bearings up.

Accelerate and suddenly let your foot off the gas and shift it while it is decelerating. Mine was stiff when I first got it and several of those disengagements and it shifts like a dream now.

are your tires barking as you go around turns dude?!?
that's not a good thing. do you have the 231 TC?
can you put it into 4WD now? if you can, put it in 4WD, then accelerate, then slam that 4WD sucker (4WD lever) back into its 2wd position as you decelerate.
