4x4 Question
Hey, my friend has a 1990 2dr XJ Sport, and when we put it into 4-Low the front axel only spins the tire some times. Its seems to constantly be enganging/disengaging but the "Part(y) Time" light stays on all the time. Any ideas guys, could this be a result of a vac hose being disconnected? Also. What are the two vaccumm ballasts for that hide just behind the front bumper?

well sounds like you have a np231 transfer case and that is only partime .. doesnt have the full time option so sometimes it will kick in or out but shouldnt do it constantly like fast kick in kick out kick in kick out how often does it do this?

well what we were doing because it seemed like the 4wd wasnt hooking up is be put all 4 tires on and and would punch it and 7 times out of 10 it would just to a rear wheel burnout and the front would give no traction aid what so ever. I do realize that my friends t-case does only have the part-time option but he says it just doesnt feel like it used to(its been parked for a year..needed mad repairs)

well take it offroad and see if it kicks out while you actually need it .. if it does theres somehting wrong .... when you punched it was it off the ground or did you do it on pavement or what?

if there is anything major going on in the driveline then u would definately know for the most part, usually loud or just doesnt work, i would try to take it in some mud or snow and see if it is working at all if it is only operating sometimes then these is something intermittently failing which can be fun to determine

the vac tanks are for your heater controls
do you have the vacuum disconnect axle up front check for vac lines
your TC should not go out of 4x4 unles you shift it ifit didyou would hear it

lol this sounds like me when i got my first 4 wheel drive rig. i did an all wheel drive burn out in 4-lo on ice one side caught pavement and CRACK, WHACK, BOOM both axles gone in one shot . not a wise thing to do trust me. try it in 4-hi but remember its ice not wet pavement you dont need to punch it to spin the tires.
