Default 4x4 not working

the trans shifts into 4wd and 4L and the 4L does engage but the front wheels do nothing, spent 3 hours in a mud hole because my 4wd let me down lol do you guys think it could be the actuator?

i have the exact same problem right now. i have a 99 xj and my front wheels arnt locking into place. i think my front axle has been switched before i got it cuz im pretty sure i have vacume lines on mine and those lines are missing. what year is yours and does your axle have the vacume? im currently tryin to figure mine out. ill let you know what i find out. i also spent a nice amount of time in a puddle when i found out my 4x4 is not working..lol

Sounds like that is the culprit. Here's the nuts and bolts of device. Helped me in trouble shooting mine.

Mine is an 85 and yes it has the Vac actuator.... when I finally got it out of the mud every vac hose as pulled off the actuator but when I hooked them back up it still didnt engage??? I think its shot. I want to replace it with the locking cable mechanism but that this is high lol im so poor
