4x4 newb, have some questions

Hey all, first time posting here, but Im on several Camaro forums. And be warned, this is kinda a long post...

I am really not a 4x4 guy, but I have always wanted to get into the off roading scene. Currently I own a 1997 V6 Camaro, that has some engine goodies and some suspension upgrades. Lately I have kinda been getting bored with the car and am kinda sick of having to be cautious of going over bump and worrying about bottoming out. Its been giving me starting issues and I am still yet to figure out the problem. So I kinda want to pick up a 4x4 project this summer, and have the 4x4 as my DD.

My friend has a 1997 Cherokee that has no engine and is 2WD, but the rear end is bad. He said if I wanted a 4x4 project he would sell it to me cheap. So I was thinking about putting in either a LS1/4l60e or a L67/4l60e (the supercharged version of the 3800). I know the 3800 like the back of my hand as I have done all of the work on my car for 5 years, and I know that L67's can put out 300+hp if done right. Either way it would be mated to a NP231 transfer case, with either dana 30's or dana 44's as axles. Id probably be looking at a 3-4" lift with 31-33" tires. It would have to be very streetable, because I drive about 200miles (round trip) every other weekend to go from my college back home and back to college.

Has anyone on here done a LS1 or a L67 swap in their XJ? And my friend who has the 97 cherokee says that I could take the transfer case, axles, and drive shafts from a 4x4 s10, is this true? and what other components would I need to make the cherokee 4x4?

Im really wanting to make a rig that will be able to take me off road, take some abuse, and then be able to drive it around town.

So any suggestions would be great. Im really more of a go-fast guy, so this off road bit is a lil foreign to me. I have the Camaro and have a 64 1/2 289 mustang (its not technically mine, its my mom's actually, but I work on it and drive it from time to time). We also have a 2007 Liberty Sport 4x4 (my lil sisters) that I have taken into some mud pits and have had some fun off road with it.

And for ****s-n-giggles, here the toys:

I dont know about all the engine swapping and what not but I got my 4x4 cherokee for $240 and it runs great. Sounds like you would have quite the beast if you did all that though.

I don't see why not. I've seen people stuff a 350 in a xj before. only part that might get fustrating is wiring up the new computor. Hey go for it I'd like to see it when it's done. and maybe a video too. I have a friend thats nuts over camaro's and LS motors and I'd like to show him what your doing!

i had seen a couple forums about ls1 swaps into wranglers and saw the one that was swapped in a xj on novak. so thanks for the other site with xj's

im kinda more intrigued by doing a l67 swap though. a supercharged xj isnt something you see every day (nor is a ls1), but i reall love the whine of a m90 s/c, and like i said i really know those engines.
