you dont have to be on soft terrain when your switching to 4wd, I think he meant that you shouldnt be in 4wd unless your on soft terrain so that you can turn without messing any of the components up. Also when you engage the transfercase shift your transmission into drive, and then reverse, and then back in drive to insure that in engages

It Depends on which transfer case you have ?
If you have the full time 4wd it should have a full time spot on the shifter, If not you have a part time 4wd.
You can switch to 4 HI anytime ! Up to about 45MPH, Switching to 4-LOW you must be stopped and in "N" !!
If you have part time 4wd, Try to avoid using 4wd on dry pavement, In other words use it when you need it !
PS There should be some instructions for your model above the sun visor !
