Hi everyone,
I've got my first jeep (and my first 4wd), a 1998 XJ Sport, 4lt, Auto. I picked it up recently with 250,000km on the clock. I've just got some noob questions regarding the 4wd system......
Its just started snowing here in Vancouver so I headed out around the house in the hills of North Vancouver to test how the Jeep operated in the snow. My questions are:
1) I assume its safe to drive in 4wd high on slippy/snowy roads at highway speeds but its not good for the transfer case if you are on dry tarmac?
2) I hear some more drive line noise when in 4wd, I assume this is normal? Its nothing major but you do notice it.
Thanks for the advice.
Paul

If you have the np 231 t-case your right snowy, gravel, sand mud,etc fine for 4wd.Dry or wet only roads big no-no.If you have the np242 you can use it on dry roads. Flip down your sun visor and you should have direction's on it.To find out which t-case look on back side of t-case by the drain and fill plugs you will see a round metal tag it will say which one. Also t-case takes tranny fluid the same type as the transmission uses.(in case you wanted to know these things)And your second question yes right again ,you will here noise's when 4wd is engaged.
