Can anyone confirm if a 4.0L from a 2000 Cherokee is a compatible swap into a 2001 Grand Cherokee?
I have a line on a very good condition 2001 GC, but seller thinks the motor is shot. I have a 2000 Cherokee parts truck with only 154,000 km on it and am wondering if I can swap em??

Whooooooooooooooooooaaaaaa!!!

If the 01 has a 4.0L then you most certainly can swap the motor.

You would need to swap just the long blocks and keep the original 01 bolt-on's and that includes the sensors, etc.

So that's a yes to it IS compatible, and the plan was to swap just the block/head/intake than reuse the accessories that came with the 2001?

This may work out just yet!

As said before the swap is doable. My 93 has a 97 Grand motor in it. Just use the intake, distributor, all accessories and their corresponding brackets from your motor and swap them over to the Grand motor. Simple as that.

This is not compatible....

The blocks are different and you will not be able to bolt a WJ motor mount to an XJ block and install into a WJ.

You CAN install a WJ block into an XJ however, with a set of conversion engine mounts from Brown Dog. However they have not yet completed a mount to swap an XJ engine to a WJ....

Yes, i'm sure of this. I also bought a WJ thinking i could use a 96 XJ engine i have in garage with 60K miles on it... i found out that i cannot and ended up buying a rebuilt WJ engine.

So now I'm to understand a 2001 Grand Cherokee 4.0L is got different engine mounts than my 2000 Cherokee 4.0L engine.
Great...I just sealed the deal an hour ago. And for a steal also...$500.00.
We are talking a 2000 4.0L into a 2001 4.0L.

Now what....

You got a good deal on the WJ, now find another WJ or (iirc) 01 TJ engine to swap in.

I started looking for an engine and found a low mileage rebuild out of a wreck.. $600.

Whats wrong with the engine? Bet it's a broken piston skirt, which can be fixed pretty cheaply if the block's cylinder hasnt been scored.

Engine problem is unknown yet. Just about to pull the flat deck tow truck (AKA: HeavyHook) outta the shop and go get it.

I did start it up, there is some clatter happening, but doesn't sound like piston slap. Sounds more like a broken rocker or collapsed lifter. It did build oil pressure. I'll get it back to the shop and pop the cover to start.

Mine showed normal oil pressure also. Drop the oilpan and have a look.

Ok, got it back to my shop. Turned it over, it caught, stumbled, then back fired through the TB. I ran it just long enough to listen to the clacking clatter coming from what sounds like the top end. As stated before, it did build oil pressure with a little smoke coming from the back/top of the block.

First off I pulled the plugs. Ugly dirty, maybe a little fouled, but none damaged...maybe from a broken valve floating around in there. Next I pulled the valve cover. Nothing jumped out at me as odd. No broken rockers, no bent push rods. The rockers look normal and without backing off the rockers, the valve springs look intact.

I pulled the fuel pump fuse and had a buddy turn it over. A visual of the rockers also looks ok. What I did find interesting is, from the front of the block, it seems there's a dead cylinder fourth from the front.
Zero vac or pressure...to the touch.

Opinions!!!
