4.0 running hot
 

I have a 95 Cherokee 4.0 with 104kmi. While idling fully warmed up, the temp gauge may run around 210 but rises as high as 225 degrees before the auxiliary fan even kicks on (which really doesn't help). While driving, though it stays right around 200-210 degrees. Could this be a possible issue of some kind?

Not likely! The 4.0 loves to run at 210. If it is hotter than it usually is, it my need a flush. When did you do it last?

If mine sits for awhile running it will go up to around 220, but when driving normally it stays at 210.

My XJ runs 190 to 200. The only time it will go over 200 is crawling or bumper to bumper in hot weather and even then it will not go over 210.

Looks like it just depends on the individual motor then.

Yea aflush would be good, if it goes too high and then returns to normal id say replace your thermostat, its extremely easy takes like 15 minutes, $15 part. I actually disconnected my aux fan b/c one time it just wouldnt turn off after i cut the engine off. Never got around to putitn it back on ahah.

I just got the jeep 3 days ago. I have always wanted an XJ and finally got one with no rust, low miles for a jeep and a 5spd 4.0 for a great deal!

I was actually planning on flushing the system and replacing the thermostat either way, as the coolant was dirty and the "running hot" is intermittent.

Hopefully that does the trick.

BTW, I noticed, the male tip on the radiator fill going to the coolant reservoir with a hose was 3/4 broken off and coolant would not transfer from the radiator to the reservoir as supposed to (it leaked)...so I temporarily rigged it up that way it does its job correctly...still didn't solve the hot running issue though...

Any fix to the broken male tip without a radiator replacement?

Is it plastic or brass?

Solder it.

Might need to take it to a radiator repair shop to get the overflow/recovery tank connection resoldered.

I was able to get the hose on with a clamp and it seems to be working so far! I chipped away at some plastic near the filler neck in order the get the hose on the fitting farther.

That is a 2 row. I'm sure it is a great radiator. FYI this is a link to a true 3 row. I have it and it works great. I live at 6800' and wheel at 10,000' + and need the most cooling available. It is all metal construction NO PLASTIC ANYWHERE!!! IMHO, plastic does not belong on a radiator!! Good luck!!

Today I flushed the cooling system over and over and I used a flush detergent as well. After the system was completely clean, I replaced the thermostat and refilled the system with 50% water 50% antifreeze.

It ran great all day, right around 200 but when it sits idling...1/2 the time it rises right to about 220. What could this be now that I have a new thermostat and a clean cooling system?
