4.0 hydrolocked

well lets just say i had to much to drink and drove my 95 cherockee in to a river hyrolocked the crap out of it. well good news is i pulled it out took out the spark plugs turned it over shot all the water out, took off the intake manifold and drained all the water. put everything back together and after a few tries it started and is running fine. about to change the oil because it like milk. is there anything else that i need to check before i start driving it again? check engine light is on and turn signals wont work and the whippers wont go off. what do you guys think?

I think I read somehwere if you go underwater alot to change your diff fluid too.

89Pioneer Nov 7, 2008 01:24 PM

IMO you should change all your fluids. Everything has a breather line and good chance you sucked water into everything. :head:

Don't think you need to change your coolant but everything else needs to be changed. Tranny, transfercase, diffs and you need to re-grease all the frontend components. Change all the filters as well, including the tranny if it is an automatic.

tranny fluid is water free drained the diffs coolant is fine. no water in the transfer case thanks guys the diffs were about full i wouldnt of thought to check them. cant believe this 4.0 lived threw full throttle hydrolock with 338,000 miles on it. now if i can only get these damn whippers to turn off and my turn signals to work lol.

You might try pulling the fuse and back tracing where they are getting power from. Obviously something is shorted. BTW they are wipers not whip-ers. Turn signals may also have a blown fuse if they were on when you entered the water. the hot and ground may have shorted across the two sides of the bulbs. And they need to be evaluated for residual water located behind each lens.

hey thanks i ran out of day light today so yeah ill get back to it tomorrow morning thanks for all the help fella ill give an update tomorrow

Maybe try using a hairdryer around the lights. Once I dropped my cellphone in the toilet and it wouldnt turn on. After a few minuites with the hair dryer, it worked just fine.

hed let us know if you can't get the wipers and turn signals to work after you have tried the suggestions.

I would go ahead and start looking for a new 4.0 now. It may be running fine now, but every story i've read of people hydrolocking their 4.0's all start with "I got all the water out and it started up and ran fine, and I changed the oil several times" and end with "I thought it was running fine, but a couple thousand miles later after the hydrolock and I now have a hole in the oil pan (or side of the block)."

Just my opinion.

Drinking and driving....you got exactly what you deserve. Stupid should hurt and be very expensive.
