Do you have Full Time 4wd on your transfer case lever? If so, that's the 242.
If it's 2-hi 4-hi and 4-low, then you have the np231.
I don't think it matters which t-case you have. When lifting a vehicle, you have to ride it first to determine if you need a sye or not. The older xj's can do away with sye's better than the newer xj's.

muddeprived is correct... you should have a sye to keep from damaging your driveline with lift installed because it makes the driveshaft almost too short, especially when the suspension unloads.
