4.0 Engine Advice Needed
Hello to all! I am doing a 100% rebuild job on my 88 Cherokee. I decided to rebuild my engine rather then drop in a crate engine. What I am looking to do is make it as strong as possible with the best parts I can get for the rebuild.
So, the advice I seek:
What parts should I go with that are better then stock for the engine's internal performance?
I am looking to build it for road / trail use. Thank you for your time !
P.S. If there is a posting for this already.....Sorry to have asked again. Bare with me, I am new to forums

Well for starters and Im sure you know this but take your tme and have a good book. I rebuilt my 91 a few months ago. I got my bearings from car quest because they and napa tend to carry better quality parts all around. Are you looking to buy new pistions or just clean yours up? And how much better than factory are you looking to go?

I am looking to make it as heavy duty as possible. I do not have a need for speed nor will it be used for rock climbing....so.....I want to keep around stock output but I want to make the engine as strong as I can. Thanks for the reply!!

Thanks for the info but I have one question. What I have been told is when you start rebuilding outside stock specs (for the Jeep 4.0), the engine life is reduced. How true is this? This was the reason I was going to build stock but with better parts. If what I was told is false.....then stroker it is

I have always been told the more preformance the less reliable but then again thats all on who you talk to i guess. But imo jeep did a very good job with the 4.0 so why mess with it to much. lol I built mine with stock parts but then again its my dd for now.

Crank is stock, rods are stock, pistons would have to be replaced in a rebuild most likely. So you get stock oversize pistons. Cam? your choice. Stock lifters stock push rods stock rockers. Stock intake stock exhaust, etc etc.
Here's the thing. You make an engine to make LOTS of power and USE that power at it's maximium all the time like a race engine and sure it may not last long. However if you make that same engine and use all the tricks to make it last when abusing it, why wouldn't it last longer when you are only asking for more power on occasion?
I have a buddy that has a 40 ****** with a Keith Black 560 Cu. In. Hemi that does 8.8 in the 1/4. He's been running it for years with out rebuilding it. He built it with those conditions in mind. Of course it cost him $40 grand but thats not the point.
You may get 400K miles out of a stock rebuild and you may not.
You may also get 400K miles out of a stroker if you don't run it like that hemi.
