3inch lift and rear brake extender.

My friend is installing a 3in i9n his 1989 xj and was wondering if he needs to extend the rear brake line? Thanks...Tj

I would... I hate the relocation brackets.

What one, I don't know. I just went down to the parts store and explained what I was doing and wanted one that was longer.

How much did they charge for it?

I want to say around $10 bucks.

Extended brake lines go for anywhere $30-$50 apiece depending on how long and what they're made out of. My extended braded steel lines I got from Rusty's are actually made by Crown (which is a known good pressure line manufacturer). Mine were $85 for the 2 fronts and the one rear. They are good for up to an 8" lift.
For a 3" lift on an XJ it's such a small difference. You really can get away with doing nothing or just a very small relocation bracket.

0k thanks guys...Tj

YJ rear brake lines work for a good 3" extra.

caged Feb 12, 2009 11:35 AM

yeah, yj. or just unbolt the bracket and leave it. it'll be fine.

Or you could pick up one of my Brakeline Extenders. (Shameless plug)
That is IF you like messing around bleeding brakes. IF you just LOVE that messy job get the TJ brakeline.

I would suggest NOT just unbolt and leave it.
Vibration can cause the metal to fatigue over time and then you have NO brakes.

i disagree with you howler.
i know of 3 xj's off hand that had done this, and has been like it for over 5 years now with absolutely no problems at all. and that's with 5 inches of lift.
hell, it's been done with the front brake lines too.

there is absolutely no added stress. no metal fatigue and no brake problems.

just have to slightly bend the line a little straighter.

Hi Howler, I bought one off you already and love it. My son inlaw is putting a 3in in soon and was wondering if he needed it also. I plan on advising him to get one off you also...Tj

If my lines were ever to be stretched, i'd much rather have the softline rip than my hardline. Imagine if a large stick yanks your brake line and your hardline is not attached to the frame.

Grab some yj lines or the relocator from howler. Both under 20 bucks.

The front hardline bracket can easily be relocated and bolted for extra length.
