Default Can a crankshaft pully be mounted 180 out?

So, I finally got TDC (I think). #1 piston is at TDC and the distributor is pointed at the correct post. Both rockers are slightly loose. Im assuming that is the compression stroke?

If so, my crankshaft pully is 180 out. The notch for timing is at the 7:30 position

Am I missing something? Its these simple things that really stump me!

If it is just the Pulley then you will be fine but if the pulley was rotated 180 out on the crank shaft then that is bad. When I changed my timing chaing I accidently put the Pulley back on 180 out but the shafts were not changed. I just made a mental note of it then wrote it down in my notebook and if I ever have to change the chain again then I will rectify it. If it is just the Pulley it will not affect operation.

Thats kind of what I figured. It actually runs fine, except for the low compression on #1. Thats why im getting to TDCC, to do a leak down test.

Thanks for the reply

It's theoretically possible for the inertia ring to "walk" 180* - but not very likely.

As far as mounting the whole thing 180* out, you'd have to:
- Mill a new keyway in the crank nose.
- Mill a new keyway in the HD hub.
- Forget to install the key entirely.

If both pushrods are slighly loose, there is "lash" present in the system (because it's not pumped up - so lash when the valves are closed is normal!) and that means that you're TDC compression/firing.

Since the AMC sixes are all internally balanced, I don't think that mounting the harmonic damper up "any old way" is going to cause you running trouble - it's just there to absorb crankshaft harmonics, not to balance the thing.

You are right about the pulley 5-90 oops my goof.

I meant the actual gears that the chain rides on. The lil arrowa are supposed to pointed a certain way. I have one of those 180 out. I don't know why I kept saying pulleys.
