231 transfer case / trans problem
Hello,
While shifting into 4 LO in some mud today I heard a grinding noise and the XJ would not shift into 4 LO. I tried to return it to 4 High. Everything seemed normal but now the trans shifter is not functioning at all and the XJ appears to be stuck in Neutal as the shifter slides rather effortlessly. The 4 WD shifter is also free floating at this point. What is the main culprit here? Is it the transfer case, the trans, or some linkage issue? Any insight is appreciated. thanks |
Sounds like your transfer case shift linkage either broke or came loose. Gotta crawl under there and see what's happening. I no longer have the factory linkage setup, but IIRC there's a bolt that tightens on the shaft that may have come loose, allowing it to slide freely.

Classic XJ shifter issue sounds like your transfer case linkage popped off or jammed. The grinding suggests you might have forced it before fully stopping/neutraling. Check the linkage first (common failure), then inspect the transfer case shifter fork inside the T-case if linkage is intact. If it’s truly stuck in neutral, the T-case internals might be damaged. Start simple: crawl under and verify the linkage isn’t bent or disconnected.

Thanks for the insight. Turns out the rubber bushing connecting from underneath the 4WD lever to the linkage broke causing the connection shaft to fall off. It went right back on and I was able to return to 2WD. Everything is fine now. Just ordered the linkage upgrade kit. Wish I would have tried this in the trail…..avoided the $125 tow home.
Thanks again |
Any of you gents have a link to a good linkage upgrade kit..thanks in advance

I bought a cheap $20 one off Amazon. I will let you know if it’s any good after I install it today.

Azzy Design Works is the best choice out there. Many copy cats on amazon/ebay and china made. Azzy Design Works is made here in the USA - Pennsylvania actually.
They make the center threaded rod in house, they use FK rod ends (heim joints) that are made in the USA, the steel plates are USA sourced and laser cut at a facility local to them. I'm not sure the details but the parts are so nice they even have the rights to display the MOPAR logo on them. |
