Does anyone know if they make a 205 transfer case for the xj? Or am i going to have to modify one on a ford to fit..?

I'm not so sure a 205 will fit. That's a rather large and very heavy case. Any reason you want to put on in a XJ?
There low range is not as low as say a 231 or 242.

just wondering... i have heard that they are practically indestructible and i have one at my disposal. One more thing I have heard is a couple of guys in my college talking about keeping the 205 on a ford 360 transmission and modifying the tranny to fit the 4.0... I dont want to go that way if I can get away with it, mainly because I dont want to chop and screw a makeshift tranny and then deal with the problems. But what's the information on the 231 and 242?... I've heard of them but never really got into transfer cases that much

Your '91 XJ will either have a 231 or a 242 T-case both are good and for most people are very reliable. They both have a 2.72 to 1 low range where a 205 has a 1.96 to 1 low range. Yes the 205 is about the most indestructible you can fine for a T-case. But unless your running rockwells and 44" tires you don't need one in a XJ
If you want a solid T-case that's not chain driven find a D300.

The Ford 205 is a HEAVY t-case... around 100lbs. The d300 is a passenger drop t-case with a 2.62 to 1 low range. It has the ability to be twin sticked, the only problem being in order to run it in a XJ you have to flip it which requires some special stuff. Or you can always go passenger drop front axle, which would require lots of Fab work.
If you are looking to upgrade your current trans case, look at the 1/2 ton truck world. Ford and Dodge both made t-cases with wider chains and bigger planateires that will bolt onto a 23 spline trans with a lil bit of work.

ya thats a little expensive for my taste...
I've heard of doing a C6 3speed transmission change and then running a 205 for it. Like I said the main reason i was asking about the 205 is that i have one at my disposal and I'm pretty sure i can get a C6 tranny for less than 500 bucks

if not you will need an adapter from the jeep 4.0 to the c6 and if the c6 is not from a 4x4 with the 205TC on it you will need more conversion parts to bolt up the 205TC

Ok in order to run a c-6 it will take lots of Adapters and crap. Check out Novak Conversions website.
AS for a 23 standing up to abuse.. I have yet to break one. AS far as upgrades go.. you can get wide chain conversions and 4 to 1 kits. But If you go with a 231D that comes with the wider chain and more planetaries.
If you are trying to up your gearing choices look at a Box4rocks Doubler. Basically you take a np231 and modify it and use it as a range box thus giving you more choices and better gearing then a dedicated crawler box like an Atlas 6to1. THe box for rocks gives you 1to1,1to2.72, 1 to 5.44. Much more choices for different situations.
You can mount a ford manual trans behind the 4.0 much easier. The ford t18 can be mounted by using a cj bell housing and cutting a window in it so you can mount the CPS.
