2001 xj 4dr sport

I just bought it a month ago and since they day I brought it home it was making a grinding noise in the rear it starts grinding at15-20 mph and when I step on the gas the noise
kinda quites down and when I let off the gas it gets louder. Took it to a mechanic and after two days! Of looking at it he says The whole rear end needs to be rebuilt. But he's only changing axle bearings, carrier bearings and seals no actual pinion. Very expensive qoute to.

Any ideas

Which axle do you have? Dana or Chrysler?

I would go to a jy or pick and pull and find you a 97-01 Chrysler 8.25 and swap it out most places you can get one for under $200.00

I'm pretty sure its a Dana 35. and definitely swapping the 35 for a 8.25 is nice I've never messed around with any drive line but I wrench on my engine all the time how difficult would it be or is it just a straight drop in no fuss and I'd be taking a huge chance with the jy piece wat if in say 5 miles or 5000 miles later the seals or bearings go out on the 8.25

Its a bolt in and you will need the rear driveshaft too. I would find one with low miles and change the diff oil before you run it.

If I do decide to swap out the Dana for the 8.25 do I use the same driveshaft or how does that go I'm a noob when it comes to this

nickxj94 10-17-2012 02:38 PM

No have to have the 8.25 shaft the pinon is longer

Oh ok I see makes sense like I said I'm a total noob when it comes to driveline stuff. Thanks man I appreciate it

Need to make sure you don't already have the 8.25 tho, post a pic of the rear diff cover

Red82 10-17-2012 08:24 PM

It's a 2001 according to your profile so it should be the 29 spine Chrysler 8.25.

It's raining pretty good so it's not the best pic

nickxj94 10-18-2012 08:52 AM

That's the 8.25

Reece 10-18-2012 09:04 AM

Looks like a Dana to me.

casicua 10-18-2012 09:14 AM

I have an 01 XJ, and my axle looks like that. I am pretty sure that is a Chrysler 8.25

Maybe this will help:

OK yea its definitely a 8.25 but it says dana on it.? not a Dana 35 then and that beeping said what are my options now that I do have 8.25 do I still swap or rebuild and if I plan on lifting it 3 inches I want to prevent and odd or extreme angles on my shaft and yolk what will a transfer drop case kit enough.
