Default 2001 Jeep Cherokee Evaporative Emission Controls

My 2001 Jeep Cherokee gives a code P0456, stating a "very small leak". I am going crazy trying to find this very small leak. Any suggestion? In 10 days I am due for emission inspection. Thank you.

Gas caps can look ok, but not seal 100%. Doublecheck that. Try a new one if you like, they arent that expensive. Have you gone over every vacuum line? Rubber connections? Give the rubber a squeeze. If you see cracking, replace. Another option is a smoke machine. Or you could reset the CEL and see if it comes back. Sometimes it will. Sometimes it wont.

I used small clamps on all the hoses on the evap system and at the charcoal canister and it fixed that code I had over a year ago . I didn't have to tighten to tight just put them on snug .

Get it into a shop where they can perform a smoke test and isolate your leak.

Hi tech:

I followed your suggestion and clamped all hoses in the evaporative system. I reset the computer and done about 10 trips but the code still did not clear. How long does it take?

Hi tjwalker:

Thank you for the suggestion, the smoke test may be the last resort.

Did it clear after you reset the computer? If not might disconnect the battery for around a minute. if it did then these other fine people are on the hurt and I'm just on the sidelines cheering on!

Also the jeep will only run the test when the fuel tank is at 1/4 to 3/4 of a tank.

Hi tech:

I placed clamps on all hoses I could reach. I am running that idiotic Chrysler protocol to set the code for the emission system. I have done more that half of dozen cold starts, idle warm ups and driving various distances with different speeds, but I can't get the computer to clear the code. By the way the engine light is OFF. Today I also drove the jeep for over 70 mile with highway speeds of 65 to 70 MPH, still no results. I do not know how Chrysler does it!
In the mean time I put together a smoke tester for less than $20. If that darn light comes on I will smoke the system, but I hope it does not come to that.
