2001 Engine Swap Options

First let me say thanks in advance, I am in need of some guidance as I have googled to the point I can't google anymore, I have searched the forum up and down. I just purchased a 2001 XJ 4.0 with a bad head(knew it when I bought it)for $800. Super clean and anxious to get it fixed. The options I have found are replace the 0331 with another 0331 or a 0331 TUPY. I called Clearwater but they were di**s to say the least. I am have issues finding anything local for a 0331 TUPY head as this is my best option I think...... So my question is are there any other options short of a 0630 with adapter for the exhaust or if someone has a TUPY head laying around that I can purchase as I am needing to get the thing on the road!:icon_lol: |
Have you considered eBay?

I have looked on eBay, there is one for $475 as well as the Clearwater one. Might end up doing that as a last resort.
Just scared to buy a rebuilt head from who knows who on eBay, if it was $200 needing a rebuild I wouldn't have thought twice about it because I would have it built local. Thanks for your reply, Heath |
Be aware that there could be some collateral damage to the engine bearings as a result of the cracked head. Hate to see you put a head on it and find out the bearings were eaten up by the coolant that lived in the crankcase.

Yes I am aware of that and willing to take the chance as I have read a few stories of people having no issues after replacing the head. Not to say that will be my luck but hey it's worth a shot right. lol

918 welcome, nice score on the XJ. Not to worry dude, look up AMC4x4SALVAGE in Glendale right down the street from you. Good people, good prices. Yes, try to stay with a TUPY head. If you use a 630 head (as you said) exhaust and coil paks will be an issue. Drop your oil pan and just look around. I would even drop a connecting rod cap and have a look at the bearing. think about new timing set and waterpump while you are there.
