2001 cherokee pros cons
I am a 17 year old high school student who's dream car happens to be the 2001 5 speed automatic Cherokee , and it so happens that my dad doesn't want me to buy this car b/c he says it is too old. 10 years old it is somewhat true but I know the Cherokee is an awesome car than can last way more than that. Anything I could tell him about the longevity of the car so he can change his mind?

The 2000-2001 have serious issues with their heads cracking.
Other than that, a 4.0 Jeep motor will run well past 300k miles if its been properly taken care of.

The years are late 1999- mid -2001 to be right, and the Xj's are worth the cost of a replacement head. If you overheat any cherokee you will end up with head problems to be truthful, but it will happen to any car truck etc if you over heat, so 6 of one half dozen of another.g/l

I can't speak for the transmission (mine's auto), but as the parent of a 16 y/o (and two more coming up), I wouldn't hesitate to put one of my kids in an XJ that had been well maintained. The engine will last 300k and alot of the basic maintenance you can do yourself. For what I would pay a Box Store to do a "generic" oil change , I can go to Wal Mart and get top shelf products for the same price (if not less) and do the work myself. Same for transmission change (the pan has a drain plug), spark plugs, etc. Heck, you can even replace your own exhaust, Cat, 02 sensors and sundry other devices w/ minimal knowledge and investment in tools. AND, most importantly, you'll be learning lessons that will serve you years down the road (though the XJ is one of the last "user-friendly" vehicles produced). At 41 years old I have owned my fair share of vehicles (both new and old) and my XJ has by far been the most reliable and grieved me the least in regards to upkeep and repair. And you can point it at a hill or a creek and tell it "I want to go there" and it will take you. Get thee an XJ (and a Haynes manual), young man. Though be warned, if an XJ is your first, everything else in life will be a disappointment.

btw, everything listed above are common things you will have to do to ANY vehicle. My point is the ability to do them yourself will save you serious coin in the long run. Example: I was quoted $400 to have my muffler/tailpipe replaced. A kind friend here at the forum clued me into Dynomax (sp?) rebate online and I got a performance muffler/pipe for less than $100 and about 3 hours of my time. Wouldn't have been an option on the wife's Mazda or my daughter's Toyota.
