2001 Cherokee Engine Noise
Just recently after turning 84k miles, my 4.0 liter 2wd auto, started to make a dieseling / grinding type noise. It seems to be coming from the engine, both when in neutral and driving. Notice it most in low rpm, then seems to disappear. I have read that it could be 1) Cat converter 2) 'Flex plate' 3) Valves 4) Alternator
Anyway to rule out 3 and concentrate on the real problem?
Thanks for any suggestions!

Loose driveplate bolts will cuase a knocking noise at idle in "park" or "neutral". The noise will go away when you shift into "drive".

Engine noise
Carl, thanks. I can put my ear right over the engine and rev it, and the noise goes away at higher revs. Certainly sounds like it is coming from the valves, but suppose it could be down at the flywheel.

OK, all is resolved. I just paid $120 to get my flex plate bolts tightened. (84k miles). They also said I should install a new flex-plate for $600. They said the bolts would just work themselves loose again.

XJ engine noise - flexplate bolts
Yes, they seemed rather disappointed that their intial diagnosis of 'major engine' problem (rods, main bearings, etc.) didn't pan out. I was going to take the forum member's advice and check these bolts myself, but am just turned 60 and can't do this stuff anymore. Glad it wasn't worse.
I'll get some loctite and give it a shot. Can you put it on with the bolts torqued down?
