Default 2000 xj transfer case linkage problem help! help! help!

I have just got done putting a front main seal and torqe converter bushing in my 2000 jeep XJ, 4.0/AW-4 tranny/231 new proess transfer and i got everything back together right except the transfer case linkage, after getting it installed it will not do anything but 4H to N and that's it, i can use a wrench to change the the gears by hand and there is no problem there, and i marked where the linkage rod was at when i took it apart, if i put it there there is no way it will hook to the T/C in any gear, any help would be great.

Did you put the linkage on backwards where it fits in the floor bracket?

That is actually a great idea. If you can find another 4x4 XJ close by you. Crawl under and snap a pic rel quick. Then you have a ready reference you can take with you.

Loosen the adjustment bolt. Manually put the tcase in 4Lo. Put the shifter in 4Lo, then tighten the adjustment bolt on the slider. That should do it.

found another one to look at, had the bar at the end of the linkage that connects to the tcase, works great.

Old post but I thought I would toss in my big stupid for others that might be searching the forum on a Sat like I was wondering why things don't work right.

I was solo so I had a piece of cut to length firing strip pushing the lever against 1/8" of feeler guage in 4Lo. Worked nice. Did what I had to do down under...but after repeated attempts no go.

Browsed this thread and decided to look at the many pivot points again.

The TC should be in 4Lo. Or, from the driver side, counter clockwise until it will go no more. Then, fit the linkage so the bar is pointing up. More specifically, linkage on the bottom, slot for TC shaft on the top, bar in a near vertical position. Worked perfected the first time that way!

I had the linkage on top, TC slot/shaft on bottom. DUH! Looks neater but when you push forward out of 4low the linkage is going the wrong way. Yup, stupid newbie dummy deal but I fixed Sis's 237,000 mile XJ so she can drive it until the next part to blows.
