not to rain on your parade, but the 2.8 isnt much of a powerhouse. there isnt much you can do to it. Im sure you will get some response from intake/exhaust mods, but i wouldnt put any real money into it.

if your into projects one to consider is a 3.4l out of a chevy camaro or pontiac firebird, ive heard its a near bolt in project and worth the effort.

i agree with KTM, the 2.8 really isnt worth putting too much money into, you would be much better off swapping if your looking for more power.

I have a fantastic way!! ever heard of a Chevy 305 or 350 Blazer or S10 pickup with a 2.8L origonal?

These trucks came with a very popular T5 standard or whatever the auto is (I don't use autos) anyway it's a simple as buying a 350 or 305 that has either a std. or auto (depending on what your XJ is) and bolting it to the transmission, then fab up some motor mounts and your done. you MAY have to move your rad to between the grill and the front of the rad support but what the hell it would be well worth it.

Currently I'm deciding on my swap or getting a 4.0L 96 -up (Rear slip-joint not in the X-fer case) but your right, the 2.8L I have, - even on premium fuel - does not like my 35's with the stock gears.

so heres a question to kinda keep the thread alive.

I have a 74ish cj5, body is junk, drivetrain seems good though. Will the whole drivetrain swap into my 2.8l xj with currently is having some tranny issue's?

I know so far that
1. its close
2. people say its a waste of money, but i have a complete drivetrain already
3. custom parts will have to be made, i.e. motor mounts, etc.
4. i would also be mounting the dana 44's front and back meaning some custom working going from leaf to coil's
5. hood doesn't fit w/o low clearance filter!!!
6. i know it is very tight, firewall and fenders alike

so some imput would be nice to add to my list
thanks
