Default 2.8/3.4 Transmission options.

Sorry, 2.8 and transmission brought up a lot of search items.

I seem to have earned a reputation for picking the least popular drive train combination.........

I'm trying to do my homework ahead of time, while I've got the 2.8 running fairly well (knock on wood). I'd like to have all my parts ready for a swap when the 2.8 quits, so I've been researching, making a list, and started collecting parts.

What transmissions will bolt up to the 2.8/3.4, other than the ax-5?

Is the comanche/cherokee ax-5 the same as the wrangler ax-5?

I know that I've read about the TJ/YJ guys swapping ax-15's into their 4cyl jeeps using a dakota bell housing. If so, then I could get away with mating the ax-15 to the 2.8/3.4?

You can use a Borg Warner T-5 or T-4 from a jeep cherokee or comanche with the stock jeep bell housing and 3.4 flywheel and clutch, or better yet use the Jeep bell housing for easier clutch linkage issues.

Much better tranny than the AX5 and stronger. Chevy used them behind the 3.4 in camaros

I thought the T4/T5 were only available the the 2wd XJ/MJ? I could be mistaken though.

So using the 3.4 clutch and flywheel, I wouldn't have to fuss with having the 2.8's flywheel neutrally balanced like all the writeups mention, eh?

And an NP-207/231 would bolt up to the T4/T5?

Didn't the late CJ-s Have a T5 as an option?

That is correct. Use the Chevy flywheel and clutch. I know they used the T4/T5 because I have one in my shop. Jeep was using them first and changed to the AXs because they were cheaper. But they go into the same place with no modifications necessary.
