1999 XJ wont start - but diesels upon key release

So, it turns over nice and fast, doesn't catch at any point like its going to fire up, but when I let go of the key - the truck rumbles a little as I'm assuming a few cylinders fire off - very much like dieseling - for about 5 seconds and then silence. Ran great yesterday.

A couple months ago I replaced the TPS, cleaned the throttle body and idle air control - because I was getting low idle and occasional stalls - seemed to clear up that issue.

I would start by pulling codes. That should give you a direction to start looking.

Thanks yes, I just ordered a ELM327 Bluetooth OBDII which should arrive tomorrow - have a road trip planned for Friday so I have to diagnose and fix this on my own after work this week. Does anyone have any ideas I can run with this evening? The dieseling... that must say something to someone.
