1999 EGR Question
I get a pretty bad stumble, cough and loss of power on cold days before full temp. Revving the motor sometimes clears it, sometimes not. Some advice I've gotten is that it's the EGR valve. I've got a Haynes manual for the 84-2000 years but OF COURSE the EGR infor cover model year 94-90 ONLY (waiting on the Chiltons from Amazon).
So here's my noob question. is the EGR pretty much in the same spot and have the same hose routing at the 84-90s?
Any thread out there (ya, I searched) about swapping them out?
Thanks,
Jeff

Go to http://cruiser54.com/?page_id=365 and download the Factory Service Manual for the 99 model year. Don't even bother with those wimpy Haynes/Chilton manuals - the FSM has everything.

fb97xj1 correct. No EGR on your 99.
Anytime you have symptoms, two basic things.
1. What is the status of tuneup hardware. Fresh Champion plugs gapped to. 035, quality plug wires, distributor cap and rotor go a long ways.
2. Scan your computer and post all codes and pending codes here (actual code, not a description) for comment

Old fart with a wrench
While we're on the subject, Does the 99 have a distributor or coil pack? My 2000 has the coil pack.

That was the reason I asked. The 99 WJ DID go to a coil pack and my 2000 XJ has one too. So the 99 XJ has a dizzy, huh? Learn something every day. The 2000 XJ still has the old block, BTW.

Sorry for the late reply. Been messing with some two wheeled issues this weekend.
For an update, Engine light is out, Motor is still stumbling

>>>Tune up hardware is old. Thats the next step. I can get the codes. But if there is no light will it still show anything?
fb97xj1
There is no EGR in the later models. What trouble codes are you getting, if any?
>>> Yeah, figured that one out.

>>>Too late! Bought the crappy manuals. Will download the FSM.
I have some time over the next couple of weeks with the holiday. I also have to dive into a heater core replacement. Yeah I'm F'd
Thanks for the input so far.

Great info above!
Sounds like a vacuum leak from somewhere. It can cause weird surging until you lay into the skinny pedal. You can make a ghetto smoke tester or blow cigar smoke into the booster hose and plug it with your finger. The brake cleaner trick works but it is hard to tell the difference sometimes.
Or check:
- PCV valves
- Evap purge solenoid
- TPS (test it look up procedure in the forum search)
- IAC (test it look up procedure in the forum search)
- Hell even check your fuel pressure at the rail
Just being a computer chair mechanic. Hope you figure it out.
