Hey there! Hopae everyone had a great Christmas! Too much food, too many people and loved every minute of it...lol.
Thanks for all the suggestions, and sorry it's been so long since I wrote back. I'm slower than Christmas...lol. So, yesterday I attempted to replace the OEM speakers with the ones I got. They are in fact 5.25 and as OAS said, I had to drill new holes to mount them. The only fitting problems I have are that the magnet is too deep for the protective sheet and I had to pull that up and out of the way, and that the tweeter sticks out too far for the original door speaker grille to fit over it. At least it looks that way. They still don't work though, so the theory of the bad wiring is now a proven fact.
Now, when I had the door panel off, and pulled back the protective sheet that goes between the panel and the metal, I noticed that there is another set of speaker wires coming out of the hole that the power lock/window wiring comes out of, and it isn't hooked up to anything. It's a light blue w/red stripe and a light blue w/ black stripe and it already has a connecter attached. I didn't think to try it out yesterday, but does anyone know anything about WHY there is a second set of speaker wires that go nowhere, and if they would work to power the speakers? If so, I'll just splice off of them to the new ones.
Now, here's the second half of my questions. The speakers she got are the Dual Illuminites that glow blue. It requires a 12v power source and a ground in order to illuminate, which are not present where I need them to be. The wiring for the power door locks and windows have these wires, of course. Would you suggest or recommend splicing a wire off of the 12v and ground to power the lighting element in the speakers? I don't want to just do it without asking someone who knows, and you guys seem to know your stuff.
Thank you all for your help!

If you dig around over in there, there should be a pigtail for the heated mirror option. Those only turn on when you have the key in RUN.

i just redid my entire system about a week ago and in an '00 cherokee the 6.5's worked fine in the front doors. no mods needed. I also pulled the 5.25's outa the back and extended my wires and ran em to two 6X9's i have boxed in the back. The front doors will take anything from 5.25's to 6.5's.
Separate question.. anyone know where the wires go after they leave the back of the deck in the center console? i just put in a new Alpine deck and the front right speaker doesnt seem to wanna work.. i know i have a break in the wire somewhere (no continuity in the wire from end to end) and i need to know where to run the new wire through without messing up things too badly..

I had a hard time installing my alpine in my 99 too. I figured out that I had a factory amp that I had to power up and then the +/- wires running to both of them. It took me a while to figgure it out. do you know if you have a factory amp, it would be under the center console.

Thanks to all- just dropped in 6.5" 2 way Pioneer ts g1644r in the rear headliner with no modification or drilling required. Did have to replace all the wiring on the right side which had nothing to do w the speaker replacement. I took the wires behind the molding for the headliner for the rear speakers, which was pretty straight forward other than the star headed bolts. PS- 99 Cherokee Sport
