Cool 1998 Jeep Cherokee P0715

So I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee limited automatic 4.0 4WD. I have a cel for P0715 (input speed sensor) but have been having transmission issues from long before that. When I crank the car and let it idle, it will start sputtering after 2-3 minutes. If I drive it instead of letting it sit, it won't shift when I try to put hardly any load on it. It will try to shift and make a bang and then fall back into the lower gear over and over again. It will continue to do this for a few minutes until it is warm. If I pull over, it will just continue to sputter but never stall. After it is warm, it will never do it again until next time I crank it. If it is really warm outside, it may not do it at all. I've checked the cables and taken out the sensor to put it back in put still no change. Are there any more recommendations before i spend $110 on a new one? Thanks!

I don't think a bad input speed sensor will prevent it from shifting. Have you tested the solenoid resistances and checked the throttle position sensor? Adjust the cable from the throttle body to the trans? Check the transmission fluid level? The sputter after starting could be a few other things like coolant temp sensor, or O2 sensor.

I think the sputtering and shift issues are two different issues to sort out separately (although there will undoubtedly be a common circle like a temp sensor...)

I'd say first the shifting ; sounds it's all over the place
What's your ATF like?
If not done , I'd start with a complete renewal of the transfluid and ensure correct level. Check level with warm engine and trans, in Neutral (see your dipstick if you still have the OEM)
Several issues can be solved with the correct fresh fluid and level.

Next to roughly differentiate between mechanical and electrical, disconnect the TCU and try shift manually through gears driving
Report back how you go with this.

I have already changed the ATF not too long ago and it didn't seem to really make a difference. I would also like to note that there was a cel for an O2 sensor (bank 1). I don't know if that's contributing to the sputtering though. I will check the shifting soon and get back.

Yes, that is something to mention yes.

A trouble code is always a useful lead when troubleshooting: it's the ECU trying to tell you something.
The pre-cath sensor is far more important for engine management than the post cath.

Which code for the O2 sensor did you get?

I’ve had P0132 pop up on it several times. It will randomly go away every now and then. Currently there is so CEL but everything still runs the same.

Update: It’s been a while but I wanted to update everyone in case anyone else had the same problem. After replacing both the O2 sensors, it fixed my shifting problem as well as the sputtering. It’s now been 10,000 miles and not a problem!
