1998 Fuel Pump Replacement- which one to order
I need to replace my fuel pump/ sending unit and I cannot find the replacement Bosch pump anywhere. Does anyone have a suggestion on which pump to order. It’s a PIA and I only want to do this once. Thanks again |
Just go with whatever warranty/brand that you trust from your local parts store when you can't find the brand that you want. Then believe that it is a rebranded Bosch pump. We can never truly know...

These threads pop up from time to time. When they do I try to go find a Bosch pump to see. Sure enough.
I work at Napa. Have access to looking at the inventory of stores close to me. Also can look at what all the Napa warehouses have around the country. Nothing to be had. Made me go buy a New Mopar one that has been kicking around on Craigslist for a couple months for $150 recently. Just to have. Best I can tell from reading stuff on the internet is you want to stay away from the Airtex fuel pumps. Seems you would be better off with a Carter or Delphi one. Guys don't seem to be bashing them as much. |
Recently posted about this same topic. The bosch pumps are impossible to come by. Dealership wanted $545 for it and they wouldn't even have it for another month and a half. I ended up getting the delphi from autozone because I was broke. They tried to sell me a clearly used pump so I ended up going to the next town over to get it. No complaints.....so far. I heard the issue with the aftermarket pumps is not the functionality, but the life expectancy.

And watch out who you order the fuel pump from. Some guy on another forum posted he bought a Carter off of Ebay and it was a Airtex pump in a Carter box.

bosch is definitely the way to go |
I just replaced the pump and sending unit in my 91 XJ with a Delphi unit from Summit Racing. It was $75.00 at Summit and it seems to work great. (My Jeep starts up quicker than it ever has in the past 10 years too.) Before installing it I checked the calibration of the sender and it was right on!!

If your sending unit is good, you can buy the Bosch pump unit only. That's what I did. Jeep starts like a champ. If you buy the pump only, you should also order the 2 fuel strainers. FS220, and FS221. One goes inside the module, and the other attaches to the bottom of the module. And a new pump to tank gasket (Very important). The new pump only, has a strainer that is not compatible with our type of pump module, and needs to be removed. Rebuilding the fuel module this way, is more work, but doable. A complete fuel module would be much more easy.

For a '97 to '01 Bosch is listed as OEM at Napa. All the rest that are listed are OEM Equivalent at Napa. |
Know that Bosch, no longer makes the pump module for 1997-2001 XJ's. So if NAPA has this in stock, and $345.00 fits your budget, you should jump on it, as they are getting hard to find.
