Default 1998 Cherokee Limited, Fan keeps running after turning off

My Cherokee randomly decides to keep the fan running after I turn it off, about 25% of the time. I've been disconnecting the battery terminal, which I'm sure isn't good. What is the most common cause of this and how can I fix it? I'm not super knowledgeable about cars (new to it), but I'm trying to learn and I can follow directions well enough! Thanks!

One reason is the fan relay could have sticky (welded) contacts.
If thats the case it'll fail permanently sooner or later.
If you're not sure how to check this out, try replacing it.

Do you mean just replace the plastic relay in the PDC box under the hood?
