Default 1997 D30 front axle

i was doing reading on different 4x4 systems. my 84 has the 207 part time with the vacuum disconnect. my 97 has the 242 with out the vacuum disconnect. how does the 97 axle operate versus the 84? is the front constantly locked up, and the only place that engages and disengages is at the t-case? makes a front locker quite inconvenient...

That is correct how they operate...

And yes... it does make it kinda rough to try and operate a front locker if the jeep is gonna be driven much. You really need one of the selectable lockers.
