Question 1996 XJ Sport new U Joints

My front u joints are trashed and I picked up a new set of Moog HD's at Autozone. I gave them to my mechanic to install, but now that he has them out, he is saying that the Moog's are not the correct size and have different clips compared to the old ones. He thinks it may not even be a 1996 front axle/diff on the Jeep (I bought it his way and I do not know the background on what is stock or not).

How can I figure out which are the correct u joints to buy? The old ones do not have any visible marking (as far as he can see). At AZ, they showed the different brands of joints and they said they were for 91-01 I think.

This is what I bought at AZ http://www.autozone.com/powertrain/u...85_0_4222_2935

Thanks in advance!

You purchased drive shaft u-joints.

You need front axle u-joints. (note the difference in the snap rings - axle has inner snap rings, while drive shaft has cap snap rings)

These were the Spicer non-servicable joints I got for my 96 XJ.

If you have doubts about your front axle. You should post a picture, or one just like it. Folks here will know the difference.

yep those are for the driveshafts. a good way to know is to go look by yourself on rockauto and confirm the part numbers.

that being said, there is also 2 sizes of u joints for the front axle, later model years have bigger u joints, the same used on a dana 44 front. if my memory servces me correctly, it's after 94 or 95, so your 96 has the bigger u joints. make sure when you get the right ones that they not the smaller version because you'll still be wondering why it doesn't work.

My 96 axle shafts used the smaller u-joints (local NAPA computer called out the larger part#). The 96 can be a weird year for sourcing parts. I have run into more than one instance where I had to buy a part that was listed for a model year one up or down from 96.

Since they are now out take an old one with you to the part store for comparison.
