Talking Noob need HElp ! blown motor looking for replacement

Hey everyone i am new to jeeps, want to finally get into some 4x4!

I just got a great deal on a 1994 xj but it have a blown motor in it, i am looking for a straight swap for another 4.0L HO from a wrecker rite now so i can at least get it running(due to no money to rebuild my motor), does anyone know which year of the xj 4.0L beside the 94 will be a straight swap. I been doing a little research but please correct me if i am wrong,
the 4.0L engine from 1991-1996 is excitly the same but 1997-2001 has engine change (ie, less wires/ different electrical connectors, also the ignition system been change rite?????). I may have found a 1998 motor for sale for 400$ in a salvage XJ that has 180000km but just wasn't sure if it will work for my car........

and whichever engine works, is there anything that i should check to make sure the motor is in good shape? all i really know is look for leaks and do a comprestion test.

Any help would be much appreciated
thanks for your time in advance

years look to be right. Try here car-part.com searches most of the bigger wrecking yards inventory and most will show the mileage and condition.

Price the parts, if its a low mileage fault and the it didnl;t suffer an oil pump failure so the crank is scarred why not just re-ring what you got?
Ring Kit from O'Reillys is around $170.
Add in a new oil pump and timing set, and main bearings, since you have it apart.
Then you know what you got when your done.
Best thing its an in-line engine so it could be done without pulling the engine.

Its going to be a toy/daily driver so it doesn;t need the close specs of a race bread engine. If it runs two years or maybe 4 or 5. You've driven the value out of the Jeep so its not like your doing it for resale.

Caish i totally agree with you. But the motor isn't really blown...what happen is when i got the car, the owner told me that it require a new crankshaft, i asked what happen he said the bearing on it slowly ware out but he didn't fix it, instead he keep driving it, now it won't even crank or at least try to , cause worry it might cause more damage, what i am getting at is that i donno the condition of the internal part of this engine and how bad it got. thats why i want to find something that will run for now, see if i can fix the bad one later.

I guess in that case, might be some serious damage in there with a probable seizure in there.
The year should be to important, get it as a long block, I would think 87-98 model seems like someone said the head was different after that.
Then just transfer over your intake/exhaust and sensors and injectors and rail.
You will be ready to put it back in.
I don't know if its common or not, but had a flywheel bolt snap off when I was changing the flywheel from one engine to the other. Might be wise to go visit the dealer and get a new set of flywheel bolts for the peace of mind of knowing your not going to have to pull it back out later for that.

Look on Ebay.. and before everyone shouts "NO" look up the maker Titan. They even have their own website Titan Engines. I found a totally REMAN Long Block 4.0 for a little over $1300 and it comes with a 7 year/70,000 mile warranty. Thats the route Im going when my engine farts on itself.

If you can wait a couple three weeks, get on craigslist and search for "cherokee" every morning. You'll find an 91-96 XJ getting parted out within two weeks with the motor you want for $300-400.

Also, you can short block out of just about any year, I think. Buy a suitable engine and use your cylinder head, intake, exhaust, and accessories. Pull the engine, swap all your stuff onto the other block, put it back in. A couple guys on this list know the block differences by heart and will probably chime in.
