I have a 1996 Cherokee Classic.
For several years, it has been running hot.
Whenever the car is stopped for a certain amount of time (ex: sitting at a railroad crossing, road work, long stop light) the temperature increases. If I'm stopped for a short amount of time, it's not a big issue.
A relative told me that having the heat on will help it cool down but that trick doesn't work anymore.
The last time I drove it, which was last week, it was almost 3/4 hot just sitting at a railroad crossing. It was already half hot from running an errand, but it managed to reach almost 3/4 in that short amount of time. I've never experienced that before.
What can I do about it? Any solutions, ideas, etc. appreciated.

First off I'd like to mention that 1996 XJs use an independent sending unit to drive the dash gauge. These things are well known to cause problems. So much so that I encourage you to get an IR thermometer and get a reading yourself to verify it.
But indeed, maintenance is important. The cooling system is all service items. What's been done to it?
