1996 4.0L rpm vs speed problem ????
Hi,
Just joined the forum. My 1996 4.0L w/AW4 transmission and 4WD exhibits the following symptoms : When I get between 40-45 mph, and it shifts into overdrive, the rpms will drop from about 1500 to 1250. Sometimes it will stick at about 1250 even as I accelerate to 55. I get the sensation of straining/sluggishness (like I am pulling a heavy trailer). Other times, the rpms at 55 will be around the 1450-1500 mark, which I assume is normal. Torque converter lockup seems to be working as rpms will drop if I slightly apply the brake at constant speed. I have been on the highway and had this happen and I will be reading 1500 rpm at 65+ mph, which I know is low. No CEL lights or any codes from my el-cheap OBD-II reader. The genuises at the local Jeep Chrysler dealer can never reproduce the symptoms, and since they can't wipe their own rear ends without a diagnostic code from an OBD-II reader telling them this is a required maintenance item, I have given up on them. The engine has < 20K miles ( Jasper) and the rest of the vehicle has 203K miles. All regular maintenance done since I have had it at 48K miles. I am thinking one or more sticky/bad transmission solenoids. Any other suggestions? I have read every forum on the web trying to find a similar situation but no luck. I have not even been able to find a chart of expected rpm vs speed for this vehicle. Thanks in advance. |

Also could TPS cause this problem? |

Thanks for the reply. I have already tried that several times. I wonder if the cable themselves ever go bad and won't adjust anymore.
