1995 Jeep Cherokee Wiring
Trying to download the manual from Kenwood but the site is unresponsive, while doing the search I noticed you pay too much (80.00).I suggest that if you still have the packaging material to take it back to Walmart.
Pull the Kenwood unit from the dash and disconnect all the speaker wires. Turn it on and see if the "protect" message displays. If it does, the stereo has an internal defect and will need to be serviced. If it doesn't, then turn it off, and re-connect one speaker. Turn it on again and see if it displays "protect".
If it works with a single speaker connected, keep re-connecting the others until you identify the speaker that's causing the problem. There may be a wiring problem or defective speaker in that location.
If it displays "protect" with a single speaker connected, then disconnect that one and try a different one. If all the speakers cause a "protect" mode, then you're probably back to a defective head unit

I took the boot off the driver door and saw both speaker wires not taped and touching each-other i pulled them apart and it still said protect, but tonight im going cut the wire back and retwist them and tape it and give it a try. I also checked the passenger boot wire and they were perfect so i hope this fixes it.
That should do it, unless the short has already damaged the head unit.
But what do you mean by "retwist them"? Are you using wire nuts?
Don't use wire nuts in a vehicle. They are not meant to hold up to vibration. Use crimp connectors.

I used to be an installer at best buy and saw many kenwood decks do this. Taking it back to them and yelling to fix it under warranty won't do anything because it isn't a problem with the deck or the install. It's a problem with the wiring in the vehicle.
As you've probably figured out already, kenwood decks display "protect" when there is a short in the speaker wiring. The easiest and cheapest way to fix it, is to ditch all the searching for the short all together. Just buy some wire and run new wiring for all 4 speakers. Cheap and easy. Even if you want best buy or a shop to do it, it's usually much cheaper to walk in with a roll of wire and tell them to just rewire the speakers, than to pay them to troubleshoot all day trying to find a short in a wire somewhere.

Its actually working now! The short was to wire touching eachother in the boot on the driver door. Thanks i taped it up. The i was going to take the deck out to check the wiring behind the deck then i took the decks faceplate off and saw a reset button. I pressed it put the decks face plate back on and the deck started working. I wired up my speakers and everything's working now! Thanks to you and everyone on this forum for the help! Now i have one more problem but i might need to start a new thread!
