1994 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Automatic
Hi Everyone,
My Jeep has started to "over rev" when shifting from 3rd to 4th. Instead of the revs dropping the revs increase by about 300 rpm, then shifts to 4th and the revs are where they should be. It has also started to not like "kicking down" from 4th to any other gear, such as going up a steep hill, it just stays in 4th.
On a maybe unrelated note the secondary fan is also now on alot more often than it used to be.
Auto transmission fluid is relatively new and up to the correct level.
All help greatly appreciated.
Cheers, James.

Try adjusting your TV cable first
http://www.allpar.com/SUVs/jeep/cher...nsmission.html
On the second issue, do a search, since there have been a ton of cooling system diagnosis threads on here.
Best advice:
Start replacing all the cheap cooling parts first along with a flush & refill of 50/50.

Done that......
Adjusted TV cable which has made a difference to kickdown. Revs still rise when changing from 3rd to 4th though. Any other suggestions?
Cheers, James.

It's either transmission slippage from neglected fluid changes or a torque converter lockup issue, IMO. See what kind of info you can find on those. I'll be able to explain more after work.

Thanks for your help so far. Reading through the web I'm thinking "Band Adjustment". What's your thoughts...............? Cheers, James

No band adjustments in the AW4. 300 RPM is about what the TCC lockup provides. Sounds like yours might be locking when it should not and sticking when it should unlock. I'd look more into the TPS and trans. speed sensor.
Any hesitation shifting out of 1st gear? If not the speed sensor is probably OK.
I'm not a huge fan of additives, but if you are getting a flare shift, it might be worth doing a pan drop fluid replacement, adding some Auto-RX to the trans fluid, drive a couple hundred miles and see if it improves. Might just be a little sticky in there. Has the fluid been maintained?

Ha! I knew before getting to the end of the thread Chuck would nail the TPS.
I happen to be having issues with mine at the moment. I normally go up through the gears OK, but even, light crusen it seeks and even might "up shift" when I throttle.
For me Ebay, $15, rockauto $30+ plenty shipping, local around $60. JY $15, (maybe negotiable). I don't like any of them!
