1993 Cheep Cherokee Laredo Won't Change Gears
Hi, I have a 93 Cherokee Laredo that was given to my 16-year-old daughter to drive to and from school. It had been sitting for a year. Fearing the transmission fluid had separated, I took it and had the oil changed, air filter changed and the transmission fluid, pan, and filter changed. Forgive me but am not a "vehicle" person. It will go into reverse just fine, but seems stuck in first gear. It runs fine. I am a single mother on one income and need to know where to start finding out what might be wrong. I am hoping that it will be a semi-easy repair. Can anyone help me?

Stuck in first gear, I would look a the wiring to the rear speed sensor. If that's damaged the transmission computer doesn't think you're moving and won't upshift. The sensor is on the drivers side towards the rear. If it's a 4wd, it's hiding under the bracket that holds the xfer case linkage. Also check the TPS sensor, and adjust the throttle body to transmission cable (a quick google will find some youtube videos)

Thinking a bit more about it. If they removed the pan to replace the filter (really just a mesh screen that typically doesn't need replaced), they would have had to either separate the lower half of the dipstick from the upper half, or unbolt the upper half from the the block. There are a couple of connectors for the transmission in that vicinity they could have disturbed or pulled apart. You can probably stand on the passenger side and look down where the transmission dipstick (the one with the T shaped handle) and see the connectors.

CRUISER'S MOSTLY RENIX TIPS
Over near the transmission dipstick tube are 2 rather large connectors. One is black and goes to the NSS and the gray connector goes to the transmission itself
. These 2 connectors carry all the info between TPS, TCU, NSS, speed sensor, and transmission solenoids.
Unplug each one, visually inspect for corrosion or bent pins, spray them out with electrical contact cleaner and plug them back in.
Additionally, if your Jeep is an ’87 to ’90 Renix, it’s always a good idea to reach up under the glovebox area and unplug the connector to the TCU and spray it out along with the receptacle of the TCU. While you’re there, find the fuse right in that area for the TCU. Remove it and spray out it’s receptacle and clean any corrosion from the fuse.
