1992 XJ distributor.

When installing a new distributor should the final position of the rotor be right on the number one cylinder post or should it be just in front (clockwise) of it with the trailing arm of the rotor still making contact with #1?
I'm definitely TDS on compression.
the rotor is sitting right on the #1 post on cap.. or maybe just a slight hair before(counterclockwise) of #1.
the jeep wont start consistently. Runs good when it does start. Also Slight backfire at high rpm.

Shouldnt the rotor be just to the left of the #1 post?

If I move the distributor/rotor 1 tooth clockwise It sits about halfway between #1 and #5. Didn't start when I did this, but not sure I don't have another issue.
Its a 1992 4.0HO.
I see conflicting info from internet and haynes manuals on this model..
does anyone have a picture of theirs,(or know for sure where this should sit in the (91-93 xj)when at TDC on comp stroke?
