no stock cherokee comes with lockers some came with a limited slip in the rear but thats it most are open meaning one wheel

Posi-traction is the GM name for a limited slip unit.
Jeep's is called Trac-loc. It replaces the entire gear carrier and is axle specific. With an 89 there is a chance that you had gotten a Dana 44, this requires a different trac-loc unit than a Dana 35 axle.
The carrier on the left is an open carrier. The one on the right is a Trac-loc for a Dana 35.
There was an optional front axle limited slip listed in the Jeep catalog back when. But I can't remember ever hearing of one actually being installed. But there are a handful of aftermarket vendors that offer one for a Dana 30.
