Default 1989 jeep cherokee 4WD Transmission

Recently bought this jeep with a blown motor. purchased a motor from a reputable dist. 4.0 straight 6. Once I got the motor in to put it in gear felt it in gaged but would not move. after warming up it would move but not like it should. Checked fluids pint low, not the problem. Was able to drive it about ten miles. Didnt really feel like it was slipping more like it just wouldnt go. Now I have drained it 4.2 qts replaced the filter cleaned the bottom end as much as possible. All back together hsnt moved since. Is it junk? can it be rebuilt as to going out and buying a used one?

The transmission is not the only thing that needs to turn to get the Jeep moving. There are axles, u-joints, differentials, and a transfer case. There are also brakes and hubs that could be worn.

Sorry Guess I took it for granted that you would think that the people on here asking questions because they are doing it themselves. Had already taken in consideration all other components that work together to make a vehicle move. I mean damn if you want to get technical? It takes money to buy the gas to crank the motor that turns the transmission that turns the transfer case that turns the driveshaft that turns the axle that turns wheel. Sorry should have explained myself a little better, nut i'm not on here to waste peoples time.

I understand you not wanting to overwhelm us with information but knowing what transmission you have would be helpful.

Catch more flies with honey, just saying.
If it's actually the problem, the transmission can be rebuilt unless it is physically damaged. I'll go out on a limb and say its an auto.

It's a 4 spd automatic with o\d. If it's the aw4 or whatever. I don't know. Haven't been able to find a pic. or post that shows or tells me the tell tell signs to know. would also like to know what years are interchangeable with the 89 or link that will point me in the right direction.
thanks

8 to 90 with a 4.0 are interchangeable.

Also very rare to have an AW4 fail.

When you changed the engine did you leave the torque converter on at the trans?
