1989 Cherokee 4.0 No Start, I know I know... cps icm timing
Ok, I know this topic is beaten into the ground, and please don't assume Im just asking before researching. Thanks in advance for your time, I look forward to getting to know you guys!
To the point.. I bought my fourth jeep last week, a 400 dollar cherokee laredo. I was TOLD it ran fine until the owner parked it, then months later when he tried to recrank it wouldnt. His expert opinion was it jumped time whilst being parked... I love a challenge, and a Jeep so I took it! Blazay blazay, I get it home, no spark or fuel... I see battery is no good, replace it, fuel pump is rusted and trashed, replaced it. Both things making an improvement. Initially im thinking it would be one of these to fix it, and timing at the worst. After replacing the former, it still just turned and turned, even with fuel in the tb. I bought timing gears and chain, and replaced that, not sure if it was out of time but the chain was super loose. Still nothing, so i rechecked spark and it looked dull... I replaced ignition coil and now it sounds like it wants to start but THIS IS CRITICAL the closest to running that it gets it the initial turnover, afterwards it just cranks. Seemingly due to flooding. Wondering how to go about checking the map sensor with a voltage meter, maybe routing the vacuum lines since Ive seen alot about that but dont see any obvious malfunctions in mine. Any advice is greatly appreciated thanks again!
Things Ive done and there results

Things Ive done and there results
- Replace battery - Gained Power and dull spark
- Replaced fuel pump and filter - Gained a small attempt to fire every three spins
- replaced timing chain and gears - nothing much
- replaced plugs - no real difference
- replaced icm - is actually trying to run

1989 inline 6 4.0 cant beleive i messed the title up, been a rough battle with the jeep lol...
UPDATE:
it does run with fuel ballast disconnected and starting fluid in the throttle body. Albeit rough, im guessing the trash made its way to the fpr or the injectors time for cleaning... also noticed a small oil leak where the timing cover meets oil pan o time to redo al of that with new gaskets, yay
im stoked just to hear it run even for a seocnd though!

If it runs on starting fluid, you probably have a fuel issue. If you can spray starter fluid a squirt at a time and it will run, then timing, CPS, spark etc are basically good.

Agreed. If it's been sitting a long time, fuel may be bad, or the fuel line blocked. If you have access to a compressor, try blowing the line through and putting all new gas in the tank.
