1988 Cherokee 4.0 engine blowing water and oil into my airbox
The engine has 280000 miles so it's got a right to have some blow-by. I've removed the valve cover, cleaned the CCV system, installed an oil catch can. I just emptied the can and it was half full of brown sludgy foam and half full of brown water. I don't have oil in my coolant and I don't have steam coming out the exhaust. I'm not losing coolant, either. My oil shows no signs of water (is clear and caramel colored). Thanks to the can, it's not getting into my air box. Where could this water be coming from?

My 92 does the same thing. 250K miles on the clock. Generates TONS of water when driving it. I ended up just draping the PCV hose to the underside of the XJ. It would clog up an air filter in about a week and a half of driving with oil/water.
Meh. Its old and cranky.

Thanks...sounds just like mine. I couldn't imagine how this thing generated that much water. I always knew that water was a by-product of gasoline combustion but I didn't realize it would generate THAT much (about a half cup of water together with another half cup of brown foam in about a month).

As the engine warms up, moisture in the air inside the crankcase condenses into liquid form on the cold internal engine parts and is carried throughout the engine by the motor oil.

If the CCV system were intact, you probably wouldn't have the moisture building up.
