1974 cherokee thm400 shifting problems
replaced the transmission modulator didnt fix the problem, also the detent switch that is located at the upper end of the gas pedal it was corroded as hell and seized up.
It shifts manually when i move the shifter to 1st and 2nd but when i put it into drive it does not shift downshift or upshift
does anyone know what could cause the problem?

Check vacuum with a gauge right at the modulator fitting, see if it's getting there. Manifold leaks, crushed or leaky lines happen.
Next up, pull governor, see if the gear is damaged. Cover on the back, 4 bolts.
Make sure the detent switch isn't stuck on. You pull it out then floor the accelerator to set it.
