Default 15 gallon fuel tank???

i was at my last 1/8 of a tank. and i filled up my 2000 xj with 14 gallons of fuel and now its full. i thought xj's had 20 gallon tanks. is mine 15 or 16 gallons? the last 1/8 of a tank goes by really fast so im guessing its about a gallon.

I had a '93 that was the same way but the only thing i could find about a smaller tank was apparently some of the 4 cylinders used a smaller one. Im not sure if this is true or not though. Is it at all possible that your fuel gauge is not accurate and is telling you that you have less fuel than you really do?

There is a mod you can do to get more in the tank. Don't know if it applies to all years, and IIRC you gotta get in the tank. But something to look into if you want more capacity.

You alter the air relief tube in the tank. The line that let's air escape when filling the tank.

maybe idk ive never run it completly empty to see if my gauge is reading less fuel than is actually in there. but dont feel like doing that lol dont wanna keep extra gas in the cab. im not freaking out about my fuel capacity just wondering if this was normal. but it seams like most other guys cant fit 20 gallons either.

ive also seen this mod btw but i remeber it being about getting the fuel pump to be able to get to the fuel at the very bottom of the tank and mounting it higher to get more space in the tank. im not sure though. read it a while ago.

well thanks guys i was just curious thats all. i appreciate all the feedback and even the picture! oh btw paid $3.33 for reg chevron fuel here in south florida lowest is 3.27.... but we'll see how long that lasts lol

oh btw my fuel gauge moves slow after refilling.... is the sender getting old?

That's nothing, gas in Europe costs around $6.5 per gallon.

Not fun driving a 4.0 here
At least I have the 2.5 diesel version(diesel is like $7 here, but I get around 30 miles per gallon).
