Default 01 idle problem

Ok my wife's 01 xj has been having a random idle problem for awhile an I have tracked it down but still need some help. When it happens it won't idle but drives just fine. The first time it happens I found a vacuum line disconnected on the exhaust manifold. I reconnected it an it was fine. Next time it happened I checked that line first an it was still connected. After messing around for abit I decided to disconnect that vac line an the idle returned. As stupid as it sounds the problem was the fix. So I decided to trace the vac line down an it runs to the passenger fender next to the fire wall into something. I say something cuz i have no clue what it is. Hopefully someone can tell me what the heck this thing is so I can look into replacing it. My 98 doesn't have it on there. Here is a pic of the part in question an the vac line on the exhaust manifold. I know this part is supposed to draw vacuum an obviously isn't some time an when I remove the vac line from the manifold it's allowing it to draw pressure. Worst part is when this does happen u have to leave it off for a bit then I can hook it back up an it runs an idles fine. Sorry for the long drawn out post. Here's the pics. The part in question had the wires running into it next to the ac condenser an I don't know if u can see the vac line on the manifold to well. Thanks in advance for the help.

Ok, that, If I see it right is called the evaporative canister, fuel evaporative control system...it's for all US vehicles...if you were to play around with that I would 100% go to any Autozone or parts store and pick up a Hayness repair manual.

Do any of those wires run to your ac compressor? Mine has been idling funny and I disconnected the plug from my ac compressor and it stopped surging or whatever you want to call it. Would run and drive fine but at a stop it would jump up 500 or so rpms and the ac compressor clutch would spin then stop whether ac or anything was on. Not sure what that part is though

You should invest in a CHILTON guide for your Jeep, it labels all those random parts...

Yea I'd like to get one but I'd have to get 2 since my 98 an her 01 are pretty different. I'm no mechanical idiot either I can go thru an name an diagnose pretty much anything on a motor. I know this is some kinda vacuum driven regulator I just don't know what the hell it's actually called an thought Sumone might know instead of having to buy a manual an look up one part
